Today, I wanted to share my personal story on how I've been trying to grow out my hair over the last couple of years.
Many of you know that I have gray, curly, and coarse hair, which is a trifecta of drier hair. Growing out hair like that is more challenging. I'm prematurely gray, so I'm already lacking certain vitamins and minerals that most people in their 20s and 30s aren’t dealing with, but that’s okay.
I've been trying various products to see what my hair responds to best, pairing that with regular monthly or bi-weekly treatments and extensions.
Most of the summer, I’ve worn just one row of extensions to fill in and make my ends a bit thicker. Recently, I was told I do a lot of pulling and twisting on my hair—it’s a nervous habit, and I tend to run my fingers through my ends a lot, causing major breakage. I didn’t even realize I was doing it.
I’ve also started adding in a bi-weekly oil treatment, using two products:
L'anza Meme Silk Plant Serum
Keratin Healing Oil.
When my hair is dry and due for a wash, I take my hair into four or five sections and thoroughly saturate it with those oils, then sleep with it like that. This has helped my hair be softer and stronger. I also recently got a trim which I highly recommend doing regularly for best results!
They make a huge difference in the longevity of your cut and how much good nutrients your hair retains.
Through my journey these last few months, here’s my recommendation:
Get a trim every three to four months
Do a deep conditioning treatment every week or two
Add an oil treatment every two weeks.
For people like me, that’s the difference between growing healthy hair and weak, brittle hair.
I'm also excited because I’m starting to use some more potent shampoo and conditioner. Kenra recently launched a triple bond repair system. They have a split-end mending serum, and their shampoo and conditioner target weak points in the cuticle to repair them and make the bond stronger.
Everyone's hair is different, so creating a unique regimen for your goals is so important.
Extensions have been a great way for me to learn how to take better care of my hair, keep the hair I have in good condition, and help me reach my long-term goals.
